Diesel Generator News

Here are some items of interest we found this month:

Interesting article from issue #28 of "Backwoods Home" regarding power generation.  Skip Thompsen writes about multiple forms of power generation (no fuel cell technology though!), including gas, diesel, wind, & solar, but focuses mainly on gas and diesel.

Skip points out that an important part of a system is the storage of power when the generator is not in service; his focus being on batteries and an inverter.   In his comparison of gas vs. diesel he notes that most gas generators are built for intermittent use and can self-destruct when used for extended periods, but some gas models have the side benefit of acting as electric welders.

Article warns to select gas generators that can run at 1800 RPM in generator mode.
Article discusses diesel generators and points out examples of a noisy, air cooled model and a more quiet, liquid cooled unit.

Article, "Understanding a Marine Diesel Engine" (http://www.marinedieselsecrets.com/blog/understanding-a-marine-diesel-engine/) on marine diesel engines vs. conventional.  Discusses spraying high pressure fuel (conventional system) into the cylinder head as apposed to (marine system) in which pistons compress fuel/air for combustion.

For newbees to diesel generators and engines, most gas engines use a carburetor to mix air and fuel before it enters the cylinder or a "port injection" system to inject fuel outside the cylinder just before the intake stroke.  Then, on the intake stroke, the cylinder pulls in the air & fuel.  Diesel engines, however, inject the fuel directly into the cylinder with care taken to distribute the fuel evenly throughout the cylinder.  For more information see Marshall Brain's article "How Diesel Engines Work" at How Stuff Works.

UK research project discussing effects on valved from reduced oil in diesel fuel.  Article by Slatter, Broda, Lewis, & Dwyer-Joyce points out that wear icreases with closing velocity, valve misalignment, combustion pressure, etc.
